A great introduction to resident camp! Pioneers enjoy introductory activities - boating, nature exploration, crafts and games with their cabin group. They have a special campfire designed with age-appropriate skits and songs, roast s'mores by a campfire and sleep in bunk beds in our heated cabins with a bathroom and shower.

Pioneers staff are trained to handle the challenge that come with a camper being away from home for what is often the first time (both for campers and families). We'll develop a communication strategy with families to keep them in the loop with how their child is doing, while maintaining the child's sense of, "I'm doing it by myself."

Pioneer campers travel as a group from activity to activity. Each session is limited to 10 boys and 10 girls (one cabin of each). Each cabin has two leaders and the Pioneer Unit has it's own director. When travelling and doing activities together, we can often maintain a 5:1 camper:staff ratio, that allows for a lot of individual attention for each child.

Camp staff work with parents to pre-write letters that can be delivered daily, that tell campers how proud you are of their success and encourage them to have a great time.

As parents ourselves, we recognize that each child has individual fears, challenges and situations that make camp a unique experience for them. Feel free to share these through a "letter to my child's leader," that will be included in your paperwork for camp. This will help us give each child the special attention they need and desrve. Our strategies are proven successful and you and your camper will grow from being involved with Camp Seymour and the Pioneers program. We promise.

Recognizing that most Pioneer parents are new to our programs, we'd like to invite you to attend one of our new parent orientations and/or a Seymour Sunday event in the Spring. Call Scotty (camp director) for details at 253-460-8883 or e-mail sjackson@ymcapkc.org.
